Adult Literacy Advocates (ALA) is a          Capital Area United Way Community Partner that has provided education programs in the Baton Rouge area for 52 years.  ALA provides a variety of classes that help our students achieve personal, work and family goals by improving their literacy skills. As a community group, we also seek to increase economic development and the overall quality of life in Greater Baton Rouge through helping others further their education to become more productive, qualified workers, neighbors, friends and family who can contribute to our community.

"My name is Denisa, and I am one of the faces that has benefited from Adult Literacy Advocates. Each of us in the program has different desires and goals. There are those of us who desire to move on to higher education, by way of college or trade schools. Some of us have plans to become entrepreneurs. My desire is simple. I am finishing what I started so many years ago. Education is extremely important to me. Not only for my own sense of accomplishment, but also  to be able to lead by example.  I want to relay the message to my grandchildren and those of the younger generation, that giving up is not an option."

In accordance with the Governor's Stay-in-Place order, the ALA office will be closed until April 13th.  If you have any questions or need information about our services, please email us at:  [email protected]

3/13/2020
We have decided that the best way to safeguard the health of our students and staff is to follow the timeline in the Governor's declaration and cancel classes until Monday, April 13th.

Classes will meet Monday and Tuesday, March 16 and 17, so that students can receive assignments on which to work at home.

We have also asked one-to-one tutors to cancel meetings with their students until April 13th.

We encourage all students to follow the guidelines issued by state and national officials.
